College of Europe Alumnus
of the Year Award

The College of Europe Alumnus of the Year Award was created in 2003 by the Alumni Association of the College of Europe with the support of the College of Europe and in cooperation with Norsk Hydro ASA.

The Alumni Association has decided to launch this annual competition in order to identify, highlight and promote outstanding contributions made by former students to the College key values through their professional career or personal life. These values are:

  • Promotion of the European Ideal
  • Promoting Excellence in all fields
  • Generosity
  • Tolerance and respect for diversity
  • Friendship & Solidarity
  • Open-Mindedness

The College of Europe was established in 1949 by a few enlightened Europeans such as don Salvador de Madariaga and Hendrik Brugmans. They had a vision of a College where university graduates from all parts of Europe could live and study together at the same time. In doing so, not only did they make the centuries old dream of a European University come true, but they also contributed to the process of peaceful European co-operation and, more generally, of international understanding. The College has now almost 9000 Alumni across the world who are drawn from more than sixty different nationalities. Each one has made some contribution to making Europe a reality. Whilst all enjoy different cultures and languages, they all share the key values promoted by and within the College.

The current international situation has once more thrown the spotlight on the importance of values such as peace, tolerance and mutual understanding. The Alumni Association hopes that this new initiative will go some little way towards the advancement of these ideals.

To select the winner each year our panel of judges is composed of high-level renowned distinguished personalities who have themselves made notable contributions to the cause of furthering peace and understanding. A representative of the College of Europe and a representative of Norsk Hydro ASA are also part of the jury.

The selection is made by written procedure. Each member of the selection committee is asked to rank all the three finalists from 1 to 3, the number 1 being given to the most preferred candidate. On receipt of the votes of all members of the Committee, the Alumni Association apply a point system reflecting the ranking system in order to determine which candidate shall be elected “Alumnus of the Year”.
